Thank-you letter
from Seneca Falls Humane Society.
I want you and your readers to know is what we saw in
New Orleans!! I felt like I was back in Africa or Bosnia -
where there is little concern for life, human, feline,
canine, any kind of life. The vulnerable- the old, the poor,
and pets left behind often because their people were
promised they'd be cared for - were left injured, dying in
their homes and on the street.

Subject: Foster a dog NOW for your
local Humane Society
Since "Katrina Dogs" have been moved to
other HSUS shelters, they will have to make room for them.
Please go to your local shelter today and offer to foster one of their dogs - it
will save a life - and help to make room for these Katrina dogs that are coming
in.
In essence, it is the same as fostering a Katrina dog.
All the shelters are going to feel the Katrina impact, so save a Katrina dog
there in your home town.
The Snowball angle softened the official ''leave all pets behind" evacuation
policy. Displaced people leaving New Orleans have been allowed to travel out
with four-legged companions. Some of the evacuees who landed on Cape Cod arrived
with their critters -- ''including several mutts, a Pomeranian, and a cocker
spaniel," according to the Globe.

Hi,
>
I am looking for an eight year old
black, male
cocker spaniel. He has a small
amount of white in
his chest (the longer black hair
covers it up) and a
graying chin. He has a collar with
id tags reading
1521 Annunciation, NO and his name
"Pedie". The
owners name is also on the tag,
Alice and Rudy
Pelreans. He also has a rabies
tag. Both the id and
the rabies tag have an out of date
phone number, the
address is still valid. We are
working on getting a
photo of Pedie and will post it as
soon as possible.
>
>
Pedie is owned and loved by an
elderly couple who
stayed in their home for almost
two weeks after the
hurricane because the rescuers
would not take Pedie.
They were forced to evacuate on
9/10 and the Coast
Guard promised to have Pedie
rescued, Pedie was
rescued the same day and taken to
Lamar Dixon. The
rescue address is the same as the
tag, 1521
Annunciation. We are desperate to
find the owner's
"baby" Pedie as they fought so
hard to keep him
> safe.
>
Pedie was at Lamar Dixon under
A000599LA636, his
Petfinder number is 30423. These
are likely no
longer his only numbers as many
dog's had paperwork
lost along the way and they have
as many as three or
four numbers. Pedie was shipped
out of Lamar on
9.15.05, it is believed he went to
Calc Parrish
Animal Shelter in Lake Charles.
They have since lost
him in the system and he could be
anywhere, although
Lake Charles believes he is in
TX,AZ or CA as this
is where most of their dogs went.
>
PLEASE keep an eye out for Pedie.
We know he is out
there somewhere. Please feel free
to forward this
info on to as many shelters,
cocker rescues and all
breed rescue groups as possible.
This is likely the
only way we will be able to get
Pedie home.
>
> Thank you so much,
>

My third little girl is a 10 lb
Maltese. Her name is Princess. Her
Nanny accidently cut her hair along
her back very short and left the
rest of her hair medium in length. I
am sure her hair grew out a little.
Maybe someone cut her hair because
she went swimming in the dirty
water. Princess is about 3yrs old.
Princess also has some brownish
staining around her face and paws
from tearing and water. All of my
dogs are sweet. I go to church on
Sundays. I always pray to get back
my babies.

This scares all that is holy out of me!!! My two beloved
MICRO CHIPPED pit bulls - Zoe and Griffin - were taken from Audubon
Veterinary Hospital in New Orleans one week after Katrina, and I
can't find them in this "rescue system". Are loved, cared for and
terribly missed pit bulls that are registered to human owners via
microchips being lumped with strays because nobody is bothering to
scan for microchips? Jesus Christ! Please! Someone help us! My
husband and I have lost everything else! All we care about is
getting our precious dogs back! We beg of you, anyone who knows
people working with Lamar Dixon, LSU, the SPCA, and all the other
organizations and shelters... Tell those in charge to SCAN! SCAN!
SCAN! Let us take some of your "burden" away... Scan our dogs, and
call Avid so that they can call us and tell us where we can come to
get our dogs. Please help us to get all that we have left in life -
the only things that we love - back again.

This dog is old, she survived heartworm treatment
and breast cancer twice and she's a very timid dog. Desperately looking for Bjak..........who
is an elderly Beagle mix. I have great news on Bjak. I found
her today. I can't believe it.
I just kept calling and emailing everywhere I could and finally
someone at a Humane Society in Florida called me. I could not believe it.
So we are now making arrangements to get her back home.
The sad news is that this whole time I have been talking with so many people
from the HSUS and they have told me over and over again that they have
searched through the Hattiesburg staging area and she was not there. They
also
have made it very clear to me that they do not have time to help track where
they took Terri's animals. I know they are in overwhelmed but how would it
make any owner feel to hear that the group who took your animals can not
help you find them. It's very frightening. One Humane Society accidentally
passed an email to me in which the Director said in regard to dealing with
my search "tell her nicely to get over it".
Well, today I learned that Bjak WAS in Hattiesburg. She only left
Hattiesburg
yesterday! The other also could have been there. Now I have no idea b/c
clearly no one really looked. Than goodness for this lovely man at the
Humane
Society in Florida who took the time and made the effort to look
through his kennels for her.

If you have a
pet in New Orleans,
I would seriously try to rescue it yourself - the animal rescuers
simply cannot do it all. Some people are getting into NO - try to
talk your way in and keep trying at all the routes (you also might
want to try printing up fake business cards, etc - tell them you had a
business in your home and need to get your records. All you have to
lose is some money and time. They're letting in business owners but
not pet owners. (story on this is at
http://forums.petfinder-network.com/viewtopic.php?t=74812 ). Business
owners must get a permit - if you know a business owner, ask them to
help (I don't know if they're actually checking to see if you are a
business owner - try printing up a fake business card or something -
not honest but letting in the business owners to rescue computers
before letting in pet owners to rescue pets isn't right, either.
Help with the media blast to get NO authorities to allow people in to
rescue pets: See thread at
http://forums.petfinder-network.com/viewtopic.php?p=737876#737876 with
contact info for media and a sample letter.
If you do try to go to NO, take everything you need with you. Don't go
alone. Take a full tank of gas, food and water for you and your pets.
Take 2 spare tires if you can. Best to take 2 cars at least to the
checkpoints, if you can. Your pet should be checked by a veterinarian
immediately - don't try to drive long distances first. There should be
vets in surrounding towns (Baton Rouge at least - go to one of the pet
shelters if you have to).

Dear friends:
I am a Red Cross volunteer working at the El Paso shelter. I befriended a
very broken hearted man (hurricaine survivor) who's only family is his five
precious dogs!
He has asked me to help him find his dogs- if they can still be rescued- as
quickly as possible. The rescuers had guns and forced him to leave the dogs.
Understand please, they were not trying to threaten him, but it was urgent
he rush as many awaited rescue. This only gave Greg a few minutes to leave
very limited amounts of food and water for the dogs. Please help me to help
Greg Heck find his dogs and bring them to safety.
All dogs are up to date in vaccinations and are tagged with names.
Information:
Pet owner: Greg Heck (now resides at El Paso shelter)
Address where
pets can be found: 1224 Esplanade
New Orleans, LA 71106
Names and descriptions of stranded pets:

SEBASTIAN POODLE--WHITE AND GRAY
SABRINA BLACK COLLIE

I WORK AT THE SHELTER ALMOST EVERY DAY AND WILL SEE GREG
TOMORROW. SINCE HE HAS NO PHONE HE ASKED ME TO HELP HIM SEARCH AND HAS
STATED THAT I CAN BE HIS CONTACT PERSON IF HIS PETS ARE FOUND. Please

The Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, 9039 St.
Landry Rd., Gonzales, La., will serve as the primary staging area. Once the
shelter is full, animals will be moved to temporary shelters in other areas
of Louisiana and Texas.
The LA/SPCA Dorothy Dorsett Mobile Veterinary Center will be at the
Lamar-Dixon Center to treat incoming animals as needed.
My suggestion is, if you adopt a pet that is from
the
Katrina-hit area, take photos of it and post them everywhere
you can, with detailed descriptions of the animal. Try and
find an owner, if possible -- and be prepared that the owner
may contact you at some point. But if you can provide a home
and comfort for that animal in the meantime, I don't think
that's the wrong thing to do. Right now, these animals need
that more than anything, and I'm sure their owners would
agree. |
