Thank-you letter
from Seneca Falls Humane Society.
I want you and your readers to know is what we saw in
New Orleans!! I felt like I was back in Africa or Bosnia -
where there is little concern for life, human, feline,
canine, any kind of life. The vulnerable- the old, the poor,
and pets left behind often because their people were
promised they'd be cared for - were left injured, dying in
their homes and on the street.

Subject: Foster a dog NOW for your
local Humane Society
Since "Katrina Dogs" have been moved to
other HSUS shelters, they will have to make room for them.
Please go to your local shelter today and offer to foster one of their dogs - it
will save a life - and help to make room for these Katrina dogs that are coming
in.
In essence, it is the same as fostering a Katrina dog.
All the shelters are going to feel the Katrina impact, so save a Katrina dog
there in your home town.
The Snowball angle softened the official ''leave all pets behind" evacuation
policy. Displaced people leaving New Orleans have been allowed to travel out
with four-legged companions. Some of the evacuees who landed on Cape Cod arrived
with their critters -- ''including several mutts, a Pomeranian, and a cocker
spaniel," according to the Globe.

the attic. The attic door is in the middle of the house and is open.
My mother left out food but it was left on the floor. Both cats are
wearing collars with purple heart tags and both are microchipped.
Both will do anything for a cat treat. Shake the box at them and they
will come to you but not together.
Please break in to the house. The easiest place to break in is the
back door. There is a pet door in the back door but if you have to
break a window go ahead and do it – please!
These pets belong to my mother. She is 73 and is grieving for her

CATS THAT HAVE NOT HAD SUFFICIENT FOOD MAY
NEED CAREFUL ASSISTED-FEEDING
Cats that have been stressed and traumatized may not resume eating
voluntarily and are at risk for a potentially-fatal form of liver failure
called Feline Hepatic Lipidosis or Fatty Liver Disease. Cats are MORE at
risk from not eating (or not eating much) for a few days or more than humans
and dogs are, because a cat's liver is not as efficient as human and dog
livers. The cat's body begins to consume its own fat, the liver clogs and
quickly begins to die (a simplification, but the basics). Overweight cats
that are deprived of food are more at risk, but all cats are at risk.
Google "Feline Hepatic Lipidosis" for any number of vet websites that
describe this serious feline condition.
If a cat won't eat voluntarily, human assistance is necessary. Simply trying
to tempt the cat with treats or particularly-smelly foods is often a waste
of time.
Assisting the cat orally in a calm, slow and safe manner may be critical to
saving a cat's life. This can be done by putting food on one's finger or a
small plastic spoon, but especially with still-stressed cats, and perhaps
especially in a shelter situation, syringe-feeding orally is probably the
best and safest for the person as well as the cat. If a cat can't be fed
this way, a vet can insert a feeding tube; the tube can be removed after the
cat starts eating normally.
An adult cat needs an amount roughly equivalent to a 5.5-6 ounce can of food
per day, some more, some less. But the point is: a cat needs more than a
spoonful of food, or a few kibbles daily to survive. "A can a day" is just
something to think in terms of. Many cats don't eat that much normally. But
when a cat has gone without food for days, a few licks won't sustain it. The
body must have calories to prevent liver damage and perhaps failure.
When cats have gone without food, refeeding must start cautiously. Most cats
tolerate small amounts fed frequently better than larger amounts. 15-20ml
syringed every few hours (every two or three hours if possible), several
times a day, is the best way to get started. This may be difficult in a
shelter situation, we realize, but volunteers can be trained to do this.
Syringing must be done safely in order to not further stress the cat or
cause aspiration into the lungs or choking. Syringing is most safely done
from the side(corner) of the mouth, and NOT straight in toward the throat.
One should syringe a cc(ml) or less at a time, wait for the cat to swallow
it (and yes, the cat may spit it out, but careful persistence is necessary),
then syringe another cc, wait, then another, and so on. If you can get the
cat beside you in a seated position, petting the cat and holding its head
with one hand while syringing into the side of its mouth, this may work
best. Do not hold the cat's head back, though. Do not force food towards its
throat. Do not be in a hurry.
Anyone --- individual or shelter personel --- who needs further help can
join this group of people who have been through assisted-feeding our cats
orally, and by surgically-place feeding tubes (esophagostomy tubes, PEGs,
etc) for Feline Hepatic Lipidosis and many other conditions:

I have 2 grey tabby cats about 5 yrs. old, both males
Tony and Leo. Tony is mostly grey, Leo has white feet and white tip of tail.
My house is in Mariner's Cove Townhom complex off of Lake Marina Dr. right
next to the 17th street levee and pumping station. It is the neighborhood
next to the large high rise condo buildings you see facing the lake. The cape
cod style homes that you see on tv when they show the large pipe, is the
neighborhood. 19 Spinnaker Lane is the address. My unit is in the middle of
the complex, 2 story, 3 sky lights on top, garage and it's right in the
middle of the row. I am offering $1000.00 per cat, there are 2. If anyone is
going into the neigborhood with a boat, and has the capacity to rescue them
please break the window or whatever needs to be done. Please contact me at
909-336-1201.
Thank you and God Bless,
Shawna |
