Thank-you letter
from Seneca Falls Humane Society.
I want you and your readers to know is what we saw in
New Orleans!! I felt like I was back in Africa or Bosnia -
where there is little concern for life, human, feline,
canine, any kind of life. The vulnerable- the old, the poor,
and pets left behind often because their people were
promised they'd be cared for - were left injured, dying in
their homes and on the street.

Subject: Foster a dog NOW for your
local Humane Society
Since "Katrina Dogs" have been moved to
other HSUS shelters, they will have to make room for them.
Please go to your local shelter today and offer to foster one of their dogs - it
will save a life - and help to make room for these Katrina dogs that are coming
in.
In essence, it is the same as fostering a Katrina dog.
All the shelters are going to feel the Katrina impact, so save a Katrina dog
there in your home town.
The Snowball angle softened the official ''leave all pets behind" evacuation
policy. Displaced people leaving New Orleans have been allowed to travel out
with four-legged companions. Some of the evacuees who landed on Cape Cod arrived
with their critters -- ''including several mutts, a Pomeranian, and a cocker
spaniel," according to the Globe.

Galveston
County Animal Shelter
3412 Loop 197 N
Texas City, TX 77590
We are a small group of volunteers
who have been
trying to help the Galveston County
Animal Shelter set
up transports for its overflow of
Hurricane dogs and
cats, surrendered by displaced
owners.
There are now close to 100 dogs and
30 cats at the
shelter, way over its capacity.
This is a kill
shelter.
For the past week we have solicited
a number of very
generous offers by rescue groups to
take out large
numbers of dogs because we knew
their lives were at risk.
We have watched in bafflement as the
shelter staff
simply failed take up these offers
from the rescue
groups who were poised to drive in
with crates, and
the transports simply evaporated,
leaving the shelter
still overflowing with animals.
We now have reports that the shelter
management is
again saying animals are to be
euthanized if we don't
"get the dogs out of there." Several
dogs were
euthanized this week.
We don't understand why this is
happening,
but we want to let the local rescue
community know that these animals
need help.
There are several things you can do:
People can get
in their vehicles and go to the
shelter TODAY up till 5-6pm and
am tomorrow with
crates.
You can walk in and adopt as an
individual
for $20 (cash only) per animal.
We suggest you do not call the
shelter, however.
Last week when people were calling
to try to set up
transports and adoptions, the staff
got irritated and
the situation got worse.
Breed rescue folks: we have reports
of some
apparently purebred dogs being kept
separate behind
the shelter. Eskimo dogs and a
Dalmatian.
Not shown to potential adopters.
No idea why no placement is
attempted.
You can pull them using your 501-3-C
status.
We believe that if you go with your
vehicles,
crates and paperwork, you will be
able to get out some animals.
Also, do not believe any reports
that the shelter
has placed all its animals.
The shelter is overflowing.
No idea why no placement is
attempted.
CRATES and carriers of any and all
kinds and sizes to put these animals
in for transport
and to hold the overflow in the
shelter.
If you can donate a crate or carrier
of any kind and any
condition to this effort,
please bring it to the shelter and
mark it "for
Melissa".

A "STARFISH" WAS SAVED TODAY This story is why we are doing what we are
doing. When we at Project Starfish.org saw this post yesterday on
CraigsList (http://neworleans.craigslist.org/pet/97680405.html),
we
sent an urgent appeal to our list of people in NC waiting for a Katrina
pet. Many have offered help and today a wonderful person saved K-7 #
1139 URGENT from a certain death. He is now in her home and her kids
are picking out a name for him.

Our adoptable animals are available
MONDAY through FRIDAY from 9:30 -
5:00, except for Tuesday and Friday when we are open 1:30 - 5:00.
The adoption fees vary for dogs and cats and range from $51 to $66
dollars (CASH payment only) and includes a certificate for a rabies
shot, micro chipping of the animal by the shelter and altering by a
local veterinarian within Lafayette Parish.
We are located off of
Interstate 49, Exit 1B - Pont Des Mouton Road (west side of I-49).
About our center...
We are an euthanizing kill-shelter due to overpopulation in our
parish (county) and are governed by the City-Parish Police
Department. Our official name is the
Roicy Duhon Animal Control
Center, named after a dedicated worker, friend, coach, and community
member who passed away.
We receive several animals in our shelter each day. From lost and found
pets to strays and pregnant moms, we accept any and all animals who need a
home. Unfortunately, we are
not able to house all the animals that pass through our doors. Each
day, some of the animals are available on a first-come, first serve
basis during the hours we are open. Sorry, but we DO NOT offer Pit Bull or
Chow dogs for adoption to the general public. While many of the animals
turned in to the center do not have history or health
records, they deserve a second chance. We cannot guarantee a pet's
health, nor provide any medical information such as previous
vaccinations or problems, however, we recommend that any animals
that you adopt receive a general health check by a veterinarian
within a 72 hour period. If the animal has medical problems, we will
accept the animal back at the center and refund the adoption fee
Young, old, cat or dog, we have a pet for you! Come visit us!
